My Lucca exploring Lake Shrine

When I have big elements in the picture, I like to show Lucca’s point of view and how little he is in front of it.

I could feel he was intrigued with this new place full of new things.

I wish I knew what was he wondering…

My Lucca :: little pilgrim

Shooting Lucca, all by myself is a big challenge but made me grow a lot as filmmaker and photographer.
I never really thought it would be that hard and full of frustration to shoot your own kid.
Of course they don’t take directions the same way as an adult and I had to take a deep breath and accept that.
I’ve learned how to embrace the moments, they do not need to engage the camera every time.
It’s even cuter if they are acting the way we see without cameras because this videos and photos will last forever and you want to remember your “real” kid.
After some experiences like the elephant video, I’ve learned that you need to give your toddler a SAFE space to move. The middle of a large bed or a big green park without any dangerous elements are great, as you have time to get to them when they start reaching the edges.

This video was an amazing personal experience. First of all I didn’t meant to shoot any video that day. I was experiencing some crazy doubts and wonders of our future - I think when you become a mom you spend more time with this kind of thoughts - and I really needed to go visit Lake Shrine. It’s this beautiful, calm, relaxing environment. I used to go there a lot to ask for inspiration before a big project or something personal as well. But this time I was going to let my mind flow, and walk around with Lucca - but of course the camera went with us.

Lucca started to run around the lake and explore the nature while I was just an admirer capturing this moments. For the first time I felt I was carefree and just enjoying and shooting him.
I’m happy that this video shows a lot about Lucca: he looks at the lake and contemplate, points to everything interesting, celebrate his freedom, talks to himself, is intrigued with animals, smell flowers, like to throw things and if they don’t brake is even better.

After this nurturing morning, we drove back home listening to some music, and this Eddie Vedder’s song - Society - played. When I listened to the lyrics, everything kind of made sense and made me think that lots of my concerns could be based on society standards, that doesn’t really matter when you have the people you love around you, cheering and having a great time.

When I got home and watched the footage without any hope that something could come up from that, I had the best surprise, great shots, let’s edit the video!

P.S.: To shoot with DSLR cameras while walking, could make the shots pretty shaky, I was sad that I didn’t bring my shoulder pad but I could manage to make lots of cuts in the editing process, and try to grab the best smooth shots.

:: better late than never - Happy (belated) Easter!! ::

My Lucca’s first egg hunting was really fun! A friend of us, Adi, and his cute son Dylan, joined us on this adventure at Rustic Canyon, CA.

There was a lot of activities for the kids, but the best part was when they put everyone together and said GO! All this little people started to run into this forest looking for little colorful eggs.

I decided to make this paper ears for him, so he could really be a little bunny and he really got into it.

The light wasn’t perfect, it was a sunny day at noon - the worst time to take pictures outside - the shades in the faces look hard, not spread. Of course you can use some props like a flash or a reflector, but wasn’t the case on this really busy celebration.

Thanks to Grandma Rebecca - that was in town from Brazil - I could be less worried about Lucca all over the place and take some pictures with a little more focus.

It was a lovely afternoon. Lucca was a little bit frustrated that the eggs that he “hunt” didn’t have anything inside - how come? - But in the end we exchanged our eggs for a handful of lollipops. My Lucca’s first lollipops as well. This little piece of sugar made him jump and explore more and more the place, of course he had a blast. And with grandma Rebecca was hard to say no, for another one and another one, Grandmas… hehe.

We look forward to next year, new ideas to come to make it special.

Have a sweet Saturday!

:: photoshoot to Care & Grow ::

This are the final photos that I used to create my entry for the Tom’s Ticket to Give contest.

As I said before, I knew about it on the last day to enter, so I just went to the park and tried to find different backgrounds for Lucca’s little Tom’s.

It was a cloudy day, what helped a lot. And I like this organic texture that I put in the pictures, matching Tom’s style.

And… I still need “some” votes.

My Lucca :: Le Petit Éléphant

I found somebody that likes elephant more than me. My mother in law not only love them but have a huge collection, I think it’s already more than 1000, including everything you can imagine, from cups to pendants, statues to clothes.

So, for her birthday, last year, I decided to shoot Lucca dressed as elephant - so cute! - and let him walk around, exploring a park and the beach.

I have to say that it was pretty hard and challenging, Lucca was 16 months, and didn’t want to obey all my commands - of course.
At the same time, this made part of my learning process about shooting a toddler without pulling my hair out.
And I end up asking a little help to my hubby and sis in law, so I can make some ideas work.

At the beach, I was by myself. I think I can say it was the craziest moment - toward the end you can see that a wave came strong towards him.

For this one was no script. The story was built during the editing process, what I like, but I also enjoy having things more organized before shooting.

Another difficult part was choosing the song. I just new that I wanted something French. I almost used a french Lullaby but I really wanted to add a little “drama”. That’s where Edith Piaf came in - I love her kind of drama.

The words in the end are in Portuguese: Happy day Grandma Rebecca - stay with my love, Lucca.

Today we visited the UCLA Botanical Garden.

It was a good place to let my Lucca go and explore the nature.

The pictures are more “bye bye fall” than “hello spring”, but I believe lots of blossoms will come in the next couple months.

Lucca saw turtles in their natural habitat for the first time. And now he understands how slow they are.

His little fingers didn’t stop, pointing everywhere.

The place is bigger than it looks from outside, I wish I had more time than one hour that we stayed, but we will be back soon and discover new things.

*The flower is from a Chinese tree - Camellia.

:: Need votes to CARE and GROW ::
I never participate in any contest, but this really moved me.I knew about it on the last day to apply - maybe that’s why I believed it was meant to be.
I went to visit the new TOMS store on Abbot Kinney - super cute, cozy, with awesome new models to choose, charming coffee shop - and I saw the flyer.
TICKET TO GIVE - what a great idea. TOMS is already doing a good job with the one for one movement. But now 50 winners will be going on a TOMS giving trip to experience the real giving first hand.
Imagine to be there, put shoes on their foot, take care of this kids, share ideas, emotions, teaching them photography, showing pictures and vieos, taking pictures. This would be an awesome-amazing-perfect experience not only to give, but also to receive. That would make me learn and grow so much, as person, as mom.I had the camera in my car, Lucca was wearing his TOM’s, it was a beautiful Sunday… let’s do it.
Now… I need some votes.

Peek-a-Boo!

Every day My Lucca wakes up with so much energy, while I feel that I need to twist “my knob” to make me flow little by little. So charge your batteries fast because this is one of the best times to take some pictures!

He is all over the place, all the toys are exciting, lots of smiles and surprises. Maybe because he just slept 11 hours?

On this one he was going up the stairs to have breakfast, I ran in front of him, grabbed my camera and hid behind the sofa, when he got there I surprised him saying pick-a-boo with my camera and settings all ready to snap this awesome smile.

Now I think I can start my day…

Good morning Tuesday!

:: music can transform ::

Listening to some music while shooting kids or anyone/anything, can help to uplift and make more fun out of it.

And if you have a vinyl player is even better, so they can see how it works and participate in the whole process of making the sound happen - the needle, first scratches, the big LP cover - all this can make their imagination flow and create a new world of joy.

Why music affects us in such a profound way?

***needless to say we love owls.

Bath time is always fun!

I just got this new foam bath toys and decided to take some pictures of the most excited part of the day for Lucca.

:: Natural light of my bathroom :: No windows this time. I’ve been using auto ISO - less things to think about while shooting a moment like this - and my super Canon 5D Mark III is not letting me down.

Happy sunday!

My Lucca - The Blog - started with this photo.
My husband that is a professional photographer said “you keep nailing so many pictures of him, but this is the winner”.

Because I’m starting to learn everything about blogs and how interesting they are - yes, I know I’m late - I decided to create this space where I can show techniques and tips to shoot little ones or big ones, without a lot of concerns, equipments, lights and “pre-production”, just letting your kid be, play, discover new things, keep a moment forever and having fun while doing it.

My Lucca used to be a really easy baby boy to photograph, he used to smile for the camera “for free”, any time, anywhere, super easy. Any idea I had I could accomplish. But now, looks like he wants to be behind the camera too…

I was lucky with this one: Lucca is so excited with his new ukulele, he couldn’t let it go for anything - he took it to the park, farmers market, everywhere. In this moment he was trying to go down the stairs with his inseparable ukulele and I was worried checking on him, because his face was like he was accomplishing a big mission, and he got tired, stopped in the middle of the stairs and started to play……… and sing! I was so happy, enjoying and watching the scene, so natural, that after 5 minutes I remember, oh I have to get my camera! It was just time to snap 2 or 3 shots, and then, he started to go down again.

:: About the light :: in front of him just a little bit up was this big window with the perfect light for this moment - 8:30am.Window light is magical, can make such miracles in portraits, interior photos, everything.I’m sure I’ll talk a lot about that, I use it all the time.

I knew this photo needed to be square. Because I felt in love with this picture/moment/my son creating songs…. I wanted to share on instagram right away.

This is just the beginning - cheers for my first post!
